A 14-year-old boy has spent five months in a Kano remand home for
allegedly killing a chicken belonging to his step-mother, Weekly Trust
has gathered.
The boy (name withheld) had a dispute with his
step-mum in Wudil local government area of Kano State five months ago, a
legal counsel Audu Bulama Bukarti, said.
“He was taken to
the police station by the step-mum over her chicken and when efforts by
the police to settle them yielded no result, the case was transferred to
court,” he added.
Bukarti said as a result of the dispute
the boy has spent five months at the Goron Dutse remand home. In a
letter addressed to the commissioner of justice, Bukarti said more than
70 percent of the 65 inmates at the home are being held over minor
offences.
He said during his visit to the remand home he
spoke with many of the inmates and that their condition is deplorable as
they are not well-fed.
When contacted, the state commissioner
for women affairs and social welfare, Dr. Binta Tijjani Jibril, said the
allegation was baseless because according to her, food is supplied to
the home on a quarterly basis and the inmates are fed thrice daily.
